Yep, those moments were going to replay for a while, he thought happily, glancing up as the taxi turned the corner a little too fast.

Even with the headlights on full, the country road in front was barely visible. The wheels skidded a little on the snow and for a second they were going sideways, but Vincent turned into the skid and the car righted itself.

David unclenched his hand from the tight grip he’d subconsciously taken on the door handle.

Jonny glanced over his shoulder again, his expression apprehensive. “Maybe we should have stayed there. This weather is just getting worse.”

“The bigger roads will be gritted though, right?” David said.

Vincent didn’t seem to hear the question—he was concentrating hard on the road ahead.

The other vehicle came out of nowhere.

One second the road ahead was dark and empty, the next, oncoming headlights filled up the night and blinded them.

“Watch out!” Jonny yelled.

But it was too late. They were too close.

Vincent jerked the wheel, but they collided with a bang and a sickening jolt. Glass smashed, metal groaned, and they were thrown against the sides of the taxi as it spun out of control across the snowy road. David reached out and gripped Jonny’s seat as he felt the vehicle tip. He prayed they weren’t going fast enough to flip. They didn’t. But they did fall, the car landing on its side with a world-muffling thud in the deep snow-filled ditch next to the road.

Heart hammering, David looked around. Was everyone okay?

“Is everyone okay?” he asked shakily, his voice too loud in his own head. He figured his hearing must be off a little. It happened. Adrenaline would be flooding his veins. His hearing would probably settle in a few minutes. Deep breath. Try and listen.

He saw Jonny move in front of him, was sure he heard him groan too. Vincent was moving too. Both of them reached to undo their seat belts, but it was difficult with airbags filling the space around them.

Everything was disorientating with the car on its side like this.

Check you can move, he told himself. Yes, his arms and legs were free.

There were no airbags in the back so David easily clicked open his seat belt and leaned through the gap to help Jonny and Vincent.

“Are you hurt?” David asked.

Vincent shook his head slowly. He looked utterly shocked.

“Did you hit your head?”

Again, Vincent shook his head.

“I think I’m stuck,” Jonny said, sounding a little panicked.

The car had landed on the passenger side.

“Does it hurt?”

“No, but I can’t get my foot free.”

“Do you think it’s bleeding?”

“No. But I’ll check.” Jonny reached a hand down, brought it back up. No blood.

“No pins and needles either?”

“No. I think the door has bent around me or something.” His voice was shaky.

“Okay. I’m going to get you out. I’ll take a look and see what’s trapping you.”

The car was whirring.

“Can you turn the engine off?” David asked Vincent.

Vincent turned the key, and suddenly everything fell silent.

“Jonny, I’m going to help Vincent get out and check on whoever was in the other car and then I’m going to take a look.
